2021 a tough season for football coaches in Vietnam

Halfway into the 2021 season, 12 domestic league coaches have quit the hot seat.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, dozens of football coaches have been replaced, fired, transferred, or resigned with the current season about to finish its first leg.

In top division V. League alone, eight coaches have had to wave goodbye to their clubs. For the lower division V. League 2, which is less competitive, four coaches have parted ways with their clubs.

The latest coach to hit the “blender” is Le Huynh Duc. He resigned as head coach of SHB Da Nang after 12 years with the club. Duc leaving the club was a surprise, but since both fans and players demanded a change, he had to go. Replacing him is coach Phan Thanh Hung, who left Becamex Binh Duong recently due to disagreements with the board.

Saigon FC have switched their coach twice this season. After leading Saigon to finish third last season, coach Vu Tien Thanh was replaced earlier this year by Japanese coach Masahiro Shimoda, due to the Japanese football philosophy the club are pursuing. However, after consecutive poor performances by Saigon, Shimoda was sacked and replaced by coach Phung Thanh Phuong.

A similar situation occurred at Hanoi FC. The capital club said goodbye to long-time coach Chu Dinh Nghiem after a number of inconsistent games. Coach Hoang Van Phuc took over the team for only a short time before passing the hot seat to South Korean coach Park Choong-kyun, with the mission of getting Hanoi into the top six on the table.

Other coaches like Pham Minh Duc (Hong Linh Ha Tinh) and Ngo Quang Truong (Song Lam Nghe An) were also replaced after poor results.

In V. League 2, four coaches that parted ways with their clubs were Nguyen Thanh Cong (Quang Nam FC), Van Sy Son (Binh Phuoc FC), Pham Cong Loc (CAND) and Trinh Van Hau (An Giang FC).

This week, V. League will enter its final round of the first leg. Later, six top teams will race for the title in table A, while the bottom eight fight to avoid relegation in table B.
